Marathon Training Starts Today!!!

Well, today, Monday 27th October 2008 officially marks the start of my 7 month marathon training schedule. My dream ... and over the coming months I will find out if it is possible to achieve this dream is to run a sub 3 hour marathon during the Edinburgh Marathon on 31st May 2009.

For the first three months, I will concentrate on getting my speed up / times down and for the last 4 will hopefully carry that speed forward into longer distance training. All running training will be supplemented with cycling / gym work / circuit training / spinning etc.

My first run today was a steady 7 mile run which took 55m18s, an average speed of 7m54s per mile. To break the 3hr barrier during the marathon, I need to be running sub 6m52s miles over the whole course so I've a good bit to go yet. It was however a nice easy steady run to get into the swing of things. I also took my youngest dog along, Tigra, a four year old german shepherd bitch. After the run, I took myself off for a relaxing 30m sauna to help relax the muscles.

All being well, I plan to knock out a 5 miler tomorrow and run a bit harder than today and hopefully average around 7m30s per mile. We'll see.

The training continues ...
